For more than a thousand years the city has changed its statues. It was Russian, Lithuanian, Polish, then again Russian and only since 1919 it has been a Belarusian city. It led the citizens of Vitebsk, as well as all the Belarusians, to tolerance and unique mixture of cultures what distinguishes the city from others.
The geographical location of the city influenced its fate. Such important trade ways as land way Novgorod - Kiev, water way "from the Varangians to the Greeks", and the land way connecting Eastern and Western Europe passed through Vitebsk. The city has been destroyed more than 30 times.
Modern Vitebsk is a large industrial centre. It has a highly developed industry, science and culture. Its population is about 350 000. 77% are the Belarusians, 19% are the Russians, 2% are the Ukrainians, 2% - other nationalities.
There are more than 300 objects of historical - cultural heritage on the city territory. These are historical, architectural and cultural monuments. The activity of such famous enlighteners as Ph.Skorina, S.Polotsky, I.Bunin, M.Bakhtin, V.Korotkevich, V.Bykov is closely connected with the city.
Vitebsk is one of the main centers of artistic avant-gardism. Such notions as "Vitebsk art school" "Vitebsk Renaissance" still draw attention of art historians and artists all over the world. K.Malevich, E.Lisitsky, I.Repin, Yu.Pan lived and worked here. Mark Chagall, a well-known artist, was born here. In honor of "a genius dreamer" the monument was created and Art-Centre was opened. The Centre has more than 200 books about this great man. On the 110th anniversary of the artist's birth the Museum of M.Chagall was opened in Pokrovskaya Street.
International Chagall's Days, exhibitions, new performances, music festival "Chagall's Violin", "Visiting Mark and Bella" festival are annually held in Vitebsk.
The estate of a great Russian artist Ilya Repin was restored in Zdravnyovo on the bank bank of the West Dvina. Lots of wonderful and lyrical masterpieces were created here.
Today Vitebsk is regarded as a cultural capital of Belarus. Festival movement has been increasing "Slavonic Bazar" in Vitebsk becomes more and more famous in and out the Republic. The representation from more than 30 countries takes annual part in it.
Modern Vitebsk is a wonderful place for artists, musicians and poets.

Marc Chagall Art Zentrum
Das Museum wurde 1992 gegründet und zeigt Lithografien, Radierungen, Holzschnitten und Aquatinten Marc Chagalls, u.a. aus der Illustrationenfolge zu Nikolaj Gogols Poem "Die toten Seelen" (1923-25), der Farblithografie-Serien "Die Bibel" von 1956 und 1960, dem ebenfalls 1960 entstandenen Farblithografie-Zyklus "Die 12 Staemme Israels".

Elternhaus Marc Chagalls
Marc Chagall verbrachte seine Jugend in diesem Haus, das sein Vater um 1900 für die Familie gebaut hatte. Zum 110. Geburtstag Chagalls 1997 wurde in ihm ein Museum eröffnet. Es zeigt Wohneinrichtung und Gegenstaende des taeglichen Gebrauchs aus der Zeit der Wende vom 19. zum 20. Jahrhundert, ausserdem Zeugnisse und Fotografien sowie Illustrationen des Künstlers, die die Vitebsker Periode im Leben Chagalls dokumentieren.

Hotel "Luchesa" in Vitebsk
